AMD (AMD) Commits $5 Billion To Anthropic In Push To Challenge Nvidia’s (NVDA) AI Chip Grip

Advanced Micro Devices announced a sweeping strategic partnership with Anthropic, pledging to invest up to $5 billion in the AI company upon hitting key deployment milestones.

The investment marks AMD’s first-ever financial stake in an artificial intelligence company, signaling a deeper commitment to competing with Nvidia in the fast-growing AI infrastructure market.

As part of the agreement, Anthropic will deploy 2 gigawatts of AMD Instinct MI450 Series GPUs housed within AMD Helios rack-scale solutions.

The first gigawatt of computing capacity is expected to be deployed in the first half of next year, with additional deployments contingent on milestone targets.

The AMD Helios systems will feature AMD Instinct MI455X GPUs alongside AMD EPYC “Venice” CPUs, AMD Pensando networking components, and ROCm software.

“We are thrilled to deepen our partnership with Anthropic and deploy AMD Helios at gigawatt scale,” AMD CEO Lisa Su said in a statement announcing the deal.

Beyond hardware, AMD and Anthropic will collaborate on software engineering, with Anthropic’s Claude models helping to optimize AMD’s internal development workflows.

AMD is also exploring options to provide a financial backstop for Anthropic’s future data-center leases, a growing trend as chipmakers move to help major AI startups manage soaring infrastructure costs.

Anthropic plans to use a portion of the chips at its own data centers while leasing additional capacity through cloud providers and neocloud operators to meet surging demand for its services.

The deal builds on AMD’s recent momentum in AI infrastructure partnerships, following significant compute agreements with both OpenAI and Meta Platforms in recent months.

For Anthropic, the AMD agreement is the latest in a series of major infrastructure deals, coming after multi-billion-dollar arrangements with Amazon and a multi-gigawatt compute agreement with Google and Broadcom announced in April.

Anthropic is also reported to be in preliminary talks to lease computing power from Meta, further expanding the company’s infrastructure footprint heading into a pivotal growth period.

The AI startup has seen explosive revenue growth, fueled in large part by the popularity of its Claude Code AI coding assistant, which has driven widespread enterprise adoption.

Anthropic disclosed in May that its run-rate revenue had topped $47 billion, a dramatic acceleration compared to the roughly $10 billion in revenue it generated over all of last year.

The company closed a funding round at a $965 billion valuation in May and confidentially filed its IPO prospectus with the Securities and Exchange Commission in June, though no additional public timeline has been disclosed.
