AST SpaceMobile (ASTS) has secured regulatory approval to launch direct-to-cell satellite services in Japan, marking a significant expansion into one of Asia’s most valuable telecommunications markets.
The company will partner with Rakuten Mobile to support Japan-based connectivity using AST SpaceMobile’s BlueBird satellite platform, adding a major market to its growing global footprint.
ASTS shares surged following the news, trading at $68.38 after a gain of 28.9% over the past week and a rise of 32.0% over the past year.
The stock has not been without volatility, having declined 15.2% over the past month before this latest round of positive catalysts pushed shares higher.
AST SpaceMobile also received a Guinness World Record for deploying what it describes as the largest commercial communications arrays in low Earth orbit with its BlueBird platform.
The twin developments support the company’s goal of starting commercial beta services later this year, broadening its presence in a new and strategically important market.
AST SpaceMobile is part of a fast-growing group of companies aiming to link regular smartphones directly to satellites, rather than relying solely on ground-based cellular towers.
The company already holds “definitive commercial agreements with major mobile network operators such as Verizon, AT&T, Vodafone and stc, together with more than 50 partner MOUs covering nearly 3 billion subscribers, provide a multi year visibility path for service activation.”
The Japan approval with Rakuten strengthens the country-level activation story that underpins the company’s broader commercial strategy, moving beyond global memorandums of understanding toward concrete market entry.
The Guinness World Record for BlueBird’s array size also supports claims of a first-mover technical advantage in direct-to-device coverage, targeting higher capacity and better spectrum use than rival projects from companies like SpaceX, Amazon, and Globalstar.
One key question remains unanswered, however, as the news does not yet clarify how quickly Japan regulatory approvals and large-scale satellites will convert into meaningful, usage-based service revenue across AST SpaceMobile’s broader partner base.
Investors watching ASTS will need to monitor how rapidly the company translates its expanding regulatory wins and technical milestones into actual subscriber growth and commercial revenue generation.
