Despite securing a new European defense contract and a fresh analyst Buy rating, Planet Labs PBC (NYSE: PL) stock sank sharply on Thursday while the broader market advanced.
Shares of Planet Labs fell 8% to $18.48 during the session, a notable divergence from the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (NYSEARCA: SPY), which rose 0.6% to $769.76.
Planet Labs disclosed a seven-figure, one-year agreement with a European defense and intelligence customer covering Planet Mosaics imagery and dedicated professional services support.
Jon Powers, Vice President of Global Defense and Intelligence at Planet Labs, stated, “Defense and intelligence organizations around the globe rely on Planet’s high-frequency, scalable satellite solutions to address complex and fast-evolving security environments.”
The new European deal extends a run of government wins for Planet Labs, which earlier in the year secured contracts with the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, the Swedish Armed Forces, and the Defense Innovation Unit.
However, bulls face a scale problem, as the seven-figure agreement is considerably smaller than the eight-figure and nine-figure awards Planet Labs booked earlier in 2026, making it insufficient to shift the full-year revenue math.
On the analyst front, Berenberg’s Michael Filatov initiated coverage of Planet Labs at Buy with a $25 price target, citing its daily whole-Earth imaging capability and multi-year imagery archive as a competitive moat rivals would struggle to reproduce.
Filatov also launched Buy coverage on Rocket Lab (NASDAQ: RKLB) and AST SpaceMobile (NASDAQ: ASTS) in the same initiation, though the positive ratings are doing little to attract buyers across the space sector Thursday.
AST SpaceMobile slid 1% to $61.78, sitting out the broad market advance, while Intuitive Machines (NASDAQ: LUNR) pulled back 2% to $14.52 as risk appetite drained from the commercial space complex.
The year-to-date performance figures underscore the sector’s underperformance, with Intuitive Machines down 8% and AST SpaceMobile down 14% through Wednesday’s close, even as the S&P 500 continued climbing.
Positioning dynamics appear to be driving much of Thursday’s selling pressure in Planet Labs specifically, with short-dated options activity tilting defensive ahead of the company’s scheduled quarterly results release after the close.
Planet Labs stock was up just 1% year to date through Wednesday despite posting a 201% advance over the prior twelve months, suggesting the major gains occurred well before 2026 and current holders have endured a relatively flat stretch.
The yield on the 10-year Treasury note fell 4 basis points to 4.74%, a move that would typically support long-duration growth names like those in the commercial space sector but has not reversed the selling pressure Thursday.
A quarterly earnings print in line with the FY2027 revenue and adjusted EBITDA guidance could unwind the session’s de-risking, while any softness in backlog conversion or near-term revenue outlook may validate the caution the market is currently pricing in.
Investors watching the peer group will want to monitor whether Intuitive Machines and AST SpaceMobile stabilize, which would suggest Thursday’s move in Planet Labs is stock-specific rather than a sign of broader sector rotation heading into the print.
