Russian officials are describing closed-door talks with two senior American envoys as a meaningful step forward in efforts to revive stalled peace negotiations.
Yuri Ushakov, a foreign-policy adviser to Russian President Vladimir Putin, said the discussions produced substantive engagement rather than a simple exchange of diplomatic pleasantries.
Ushakov confirmed that US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner “outlined a number of ideas regarding possible avenues for a settlement” during the meeting, though he declined to share specifics.
“The talks went beyond a mere exchange of views on resolving the Ukrainian crisis. Economic issues and potential major, mutually beneficial Russian-American projects were discussed in some detail,” Ushakov said.
The meeting lasted more than three hours, signaling that both sides were prepared to engage seriously on a range of complex and sensitive topics.
Putin authorized a 72-hour pause on strikes against Kyiv to allow for the US envoys’ safe travel to and from the meeting, according to Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov.
The temporary halt in strikes represented a notable gesture ahead of the talks, with observers watching closely to see whether it signals any broader willingness to negotiate a lasting ceasefire.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also weighed in following his own conversations with Witkoff and Kushner, striking a cautiously cooperative tone on the question of halting hostilities.
Zelensky said that after speaking with the two US envoys, Ukraine was “ready to observe a ceasefire in airstrikes” in cities where negotiations were taking place.
The parallel statements from both Moscow and Kyiv suggest a fragile but potentially significant opening in diplomatic efforts that had largely stalled in recent months.
Witkoff and Kushner have emerged as key figures in the Trump administration’s push to broker an end to the war, conducting direct outreach to senior officials on both sides of the conflict.
Whether the momentum generated by the latest round of talks translates into a formal framework for peace remains to be seen, with deep mistrust between Russia and Ukraine still presenting major obstacles.
