Birkenstock And Crocs (CROX) Ride Ballet Flat Wave As Footwear Trend Shows No Signs Of Slowing

The ballet flat has officially moved beyond niche fashion circles and into mainstream footwear culture, with nearly every major brand now launching its own version.

Birkenstock and Crocs (CROX) are among the most prominent names capitalizing on what has become one of the most durable style movements in recent footwear history.

Birkenstock CEO Oliver Reichert has made the brand’s position on the trend explicitly clear, stating that the ballerina is the trend for the next three to five years.

Reichert pointed to growing consumer demand as the driver behind the brand’s strategic push into ballet-inspired silhouettes, including mary jane styles that have seen a surge in interest.

The brand launched the Santa Clarita as part of its effort to capture what Reichert described as “increasing global demand for ballerina,” signaling this is a long-term business priority and not a passing experiment.

Birkenstock further deepened its commitment to the trend through collaborations with Repetto, Song for the Mute, and Ader Erro, all targeting the growing female-led appetite for ballet aesthetics.

The Repetto collaboration sold out quickly, underscoring genuine consumer demand rather than manufactured hype, and validating Birkenstock’s calculated push into this category.

Crocs took a notably different approach, launching the Classic Ballet Flat in January at a $45 price point that put the style within reach of a much broader consumer base.

A swiveling strap on the Crocs design allows the shoe to function as both a ballet flat and a mary jane, effectively offering two styles in a single purchase and fueling viral social media attention.

The trend has received significant cultural reinforcement from high-profile celebrity sightings, with figures including Bella Hadid, Charli XCX, and Lola Tung all spotted wearing ballet-inspired footwear in public.

The crossover appeal of the style, spanning luxury collaborations and accessible mass-market options, suggests the ballet flat trend has genuine staying power across multiple consumer demographics.

For investors watching Crocs (CROX) and privately held Birkenstock, the sustained demand in this category represents a meaningful revenue opportunity as brands continue to expand their ballet flat offerings through 2026 and beyond.
