Ed Sheeran addressed the controversy surrounding his Loop Tour at a solo concert in Philadelphia on Saturday, speaking directly to the crowd about the situation in Gaza.
The British singer opened the show by acknowledging his long-standing reluctance to wade into political commentary, citing a career built around unity and shared humanity rather than division.
“I have tried in my career not to be a political commentator of any kind because I want my music and shows to be about unity, not division. About humanity, not politics,” Sheeran told the crowd.
He then drew a distinction between political commentary and humanitarian concern, saying the scale of suffering in the region had pushed him to finally speak out publicly.
Sheeran described the situation in Gaza as “catastrophic and unjustifiable and disproportionate” and said his heart was “broken by the scale of the devastation” in the region.
He also acknowledged Hamas’s October 7, 2023, attack on Israel, calling it “horrific,” making clear his remarks were not intended as one-sided commentary on the conflict.
The Philadelphia address came after rapper Macklemore was removed from the Loop Tour following pro-Palestinian comments he made during an opening set at MetLife Stadium on September 4.
Macklemore said on Monday that stadium owners, including New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft, pressured Sheeran to remove him from the tour over those comments.
Sheeran pushed back on that characterization in an Instagram post, stating that tour promoters, not himself, made the decision to cut Macklemore from the lineup.
Pro-Israel groups had targeted Macklemore after he delivered a “free Palestine” message during his opening set, according to The Hollywood Reporter, triggering a chain of events that engulfed the entire tour.
Macklemore responded publicly, emphasizing his thirteen years of friendship with Sheeran and expressing hope the two could preserve their relationship despite the disagreement.
“I hope we continue listening, studying what is happening in Palestine and wrestling with what neutrality means in a moment like this,” Macklemore said, adding that his door would remain open for further conversation.
Several supporting artists on the Loop Tour dropped out in solidarity with Macklemore, and ticket prices fell sharply as some fans sought refunds amid the growing controversy.
The episode has placed Sheeran at the center of a cultural and political debate that shows little sign of fading as the tour continues across the United States.
