SpaceX Starlink Races Ahead In D2C Satellite Phone Market With 650 Satellites In Orbit

SpaceX has firmly established itself as the dominant force in direct-to-cell satellite communications, with 650 dedicated DTC satellites now in orbit serving users across the globe.

The company launched its first Starlink satellites capable of supporting direct cellphone-to-satellite calls in January 2024, moving quickly after rivals demonstrated the concept was viable.

AST SpaceMobile (ASTS) first proved the cellphone-to-satellite concept in 2023, demonstrating that direct mobile calls could be connected via satellite without specialized hardware.

SpaceX wasted little time responding, getting its own DTC-capable satellites into orbit months before AST launched its first five commercial BlueBird satellites.

Two years on, the competitive gap has widened considerably, with SpaceX holding 650 DTC satellites in orbit compared to AST SpaceMobile’s 13.

AST SpaceMobile needs at least 45 satellites to begin offering service in select markets, meaning the company remains well short of even a limited commercial launch.

SpaceX recently won FCC approval to launch an additional 15,000 DTC-capable satellites, a figure that signals the company’s long-term ambitions in this segment of the communications market.

To put that in context, SpaceX already has more than 10,000 Starlink satellites in orbit overall, meaning DTC currently represents just 6.5% of the total constellation.

Starlink’s broader business is already expanding at a rapid pace, with revenue growing at 66% annually and profit climbing at 79%, making DTC an emerging growth layer on top of an already strong foundation.

Opensignal.com has launched an interactive global map that tracks near-real-time satellite DTC connections, updated monthly, offering investors and analysts a new window into where this technology is actually being used.

The data shows that the vast majority of DTC phone connections are currently occurring in the United States and Canada, where Starlink has the deepest market penetration.

Puerto Rico, the British Virgin Islands, and the U.S. Virgin Islands also show surprisingly active satellite phone connections, while the broader Caribbean region lags behind significantly.

Industry observers suggest the heavily concentrated usage patterns may simply reflect how few DTC satellites are currently operational relative to what the full constellation will eventually support.

With FCC approval secured for 15,000 additional DTC satellites, SpaceX has an enormous runway to expand coverage geographically and deepen its lead over competitors like AST SpaceMobile.
