The president’s criticism of Republican Donald Trump continued at the Gridiron Club and Foundation’s annual dinner, as Biden deflected continued criticism of his hazy memory and apparent confusion, highlighting moments in which the 77-year-old Trump has also mistaken. “Don’t tell him, he thinks he’s running against Barack Obama, that’s what he said,” said Biden, 81, who also joked that he was staying up well past his bedtime.

This was the first time Biden attended the dinner during his presidency and comes as the 2024 election approaches and the rematch between Biden and Trump heats up.

The annual bacchanal organized by the newspaper organization, now in its 139th year, traces its origins to 1885; that was the year President Grover Cleveland refused to attend.

Since then, every president has attended at least one Gridiron dinner. However, Biden quickly turned serious, highlighting what he sees as a real threat to democracy if Trump, who continues to falsely claim that the 2020 election was stolen, returns to the White House.

The speech had echoes of comments from the Biden campaign, criticizing Trump and noting that he was too lenient toward Russian President Vladimir Putin. “We live in an unprecedented time in democracy,” he said. “An unprecedented moment in history. Democracy and freedom are literally under attack.

Putin is making progress in Europe. “My predecessor bows down to him and says, ‘Do whatever you want.’” Biden then introduced Ukrainian Ambassador Oksana Markarova and Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas. “We will not bow down. They will not bow, and I will not bow,” Biden said. Dressed in white-tie attire as usual, Biden brought along his daughter Ashley.

The dinner has a reputation as a night of bipartisan merriment and was packed with politicians and prominent Washington figures, including Vice President Kamala Harris and her husband Doug Emhoff, at least eight Cabinet members, at least five members of Congress, five governors and at least five ambassadors.
