President Joe Biden confirmed this in his speech on Tuesday, October 10, 2023, and said that at least 14 Americans have been killed in the violence.
He also said that he has directed his team to share intelligence and deploy additional experts to help Israel with the hostage recovery efforts.
The speech was ambiguous regarding the relationship between the United States and Israel at a time of crisis, in addition to insisting that the rule of law be respected.
The exact number of Americans who are being held by Hamas is not clear, but Israel’s Minister for Strategic Affairs Ron Dermer said he thinks it is “scores of hostages”.
Secretary of State Antony Blinken also said that “several Americans” may be among the dead or missing.
The conflict between Israel and Hamas has escalated into a full-scale war, with more than 1,000 people killed in Israel and 500 people killed in Gaza.
The international community has called for an immediate ceasefire and a peaceful resolution of the crisis.
